Located amidst a picturesque landscape, the ruins of the archaeological site of Volubilis bear testimony to several civilizations namely, the Mauretanian period when the city was part of an independent Kingdom, the Roman period, when it was a metropolis of the Roman province of Mauretania Tigitana and finally, an Islamic period characterized by the establishment of the Idrisside dynasty. Built at the bottom of Djebel Zerhoun on an area of 42 hectares, Volubilis could preserve its authenticity because it had not been invaded for nearly one thousand years. It is one of the richest sites of this period in North Africa, not only for its ruins but also for the great richness of its epigraphic data.Type
