Born in 1930 in Jorf-El-Malek, Gharbaoui had a passion for art at an early age. From 1952 to 1958, he studied at the “Ecole National des beaux arts” in Paris and at Julian Academy. The Italian government awarded him a scholarship in 1958 and he settled in Rome. In 1960, he moved to Rabat where he established his studio in Chellah. Djillali Gharbaoui is considered as the first non-figurative painter of Morocco. The visual space, in Gharbaoui’s works, bears the mark of a renewal in the Moroccan painting. His violent works are nothing but the reflection of the artist’s unhappiness. At that time, he was compared to Achtung, Klein and other famous European artists of the fifties and the sixties. From 1960, he travelled a lot in Europe before he died in 1971, in Paris.Type
