In 1513, Mostapha Zemmouri nickamed “Estevanico” was sold as a slave to the Portuguese occupying the city of Azemmour. In 1520, he was sold to Andres Dorantes de Carranza, a Spanish Nobleman with whom he travelled to Hispaniola and Cuba; in the Panfilo de Narvaez expedition in 1527 to conquer Florida. He became the first African to set foot on what is now the United States of America. In 1539, Estevanica again accompanied Fray Marcos de Niza, as a guide, in search for the fabulous cities of gold. He was a remarkable polyglot and although he was considered as a deity by the American Indian tribes for his knowledge regarding herbs and remedies, he was killed by an Indian tribe.Type
