The strategic location of Mazagan on the west coast of Morocco allowed the Portuguese to occupy the region and found a city and build a fortress, around 1506. The new city soon became a very important commercial port. The Portuguese, chased from Azemmour and Agadir, came to the city which had been fortified since 1542. Indeed, a belt of thick walls gave the city its current appearance and made it a formidable citadel. During two centuries, Mazagan withstood the attacks of the moroccan army. The Portuguese had even to transform the storehouse into a tank to store drinking water. After a long siege, Sidi-Mohammed Ben Abdallah took the city in 1769. It was one of the last portuguese bastions in Morocco.Type
