Abstract

There are different varieties of the High Atlas carpet : the field carpets, full of motifs and symbols, some offer a framed field decorated with a medallion in the center. Others, polychromic, with a fine decoration and a refined composition, are divided into compartments. Sometimes geometric, sometimes figurative, the decoration does not follow any plan or any predetermined model. The weaver relies on her spur of the moment and her sense of balance.
