- I remember that around the end of the war that parachutists landed on les Espèces.

- We didn't see them but we found the parachutes made of white silk,

- and with the parachutes mum made us fashion beautiful robes of white silk.

- Dad came in France in 1914.

- He married mum in 1931 and they came to Les Espèces in 1934.

- At that time I was 6 months old and I stayed there until I was 17 years old.

- My father was from Italy, Piedmont area.

- He crossed the border on foot and worked in France, first as a lumberjack, then as farmer.

- We used to take this path to go to school, it took us 45 minutes to go and 1 hour to come back.

- Every day, whatever the snow, the rain, the wind, we had to go to school.

- Elise Souret was born in Cuges les Pins in 1933.

- His father was 16 when he left Lurisia in Piedmont for Cuges les Pins to work as lumberjack.

- Soon after he arrived, Les Espèces were bought by a rich landlord.

- Elise's father becomes then a farmer in charge of the domain and settles there, with his wife and his three daughters.

- During WWII, this isolated territory is an ideal hiding place for several French, Italian and Spanish deserters.

- Gestapo and Nazi army set fire to the woods thinking it was fiefdom of Resistance.

- Today, Elise comes back regularly on her childhood playground, most of time alone.
