Abstract

"Thinking the Mediterranean” is organized by Alex Med since 2006, in an aim to enhance the dialogue on the cultural heritage of the Mediterranean region as a center of cultural exchange and co-existence, by hosting eminent intellectuals and researchers from the region. Professor Edhem Eldem is talking about the consequences of the invasion of Egypt in 1798 and the declaration of war between Austria and Serbia in 1914 on the Mediterranean : First, they illustrate the development of marine technology, secondly they show the importance of the Mediterranean region which causes enormous change. The events of 1798 represent a period of decline, while those of 1914 marked a revitalization period.
