Kyprianos (1756-1821), Archbishop of Cyprus during the years of the Ottoman occupation of the island, was a strong leading figure. He visualised the revolution against the Ottomans and tried to collaborate with like-minded leaders in Greece. His exemplary hanging in 1828 was thought by the Ottomans to scare the masses off the idea of rebellion.Type
