Abstract

The Tombs of the Kings is actually the burial site - the necropolis - of Paphos, the capital of Cyprus when the island was under the Ptolemies. Despite its name, no king was ever buried here. The site was rather the burial place of members of the political and administrative elite. The necropolis was in use until the 2nd century AD.
