Miriem Makeba was a South African singer, born March 4, 1932 in Johannesburg who was naturalized Algerian in 1972. She was sometimes called Mama Africa and had always dreamed of a united Africa. In her country she exhorted her fellow blacks to forgive, as blacks and whites should learn to live together. Miriem Makeba died November 9, 2006, in Italy. She was the indisputable star of the Pan-African Festival of Algiers.Type
