Abstract

Massinissa, king of Numidia and initiator of culture, was a head of state of great stature. He was Chief of the Numid and Aguellide cavalries, the Massaesyla and the Massyles, whose capital was first Siga, then Cirta, a prosperous and powerful economic center. Under his reign, the Algerian state developed agriculture by settling Nomads, founded cities, organized an efficient administration, put up a strongly equipped army and provided an unprecedented boost to art and culture.
