Abstract

The casbah of Algiers is a sample of the historical town of the Maghreb which influenced town planning in the western part of the Mediterranean and sub-saharan Africa. The site is located on the Mediterranean coast and has been inhabited since the sixth century before our era when a phoenician trade counter was established. The term casbah, that referred to the highest spot of the medina in the Zirid period, now applies to the whole town of El Djazair, which limits are marked by ramparts of the Ottoman period, built at the end of the 16th century.
