Abstract

Djouha is thought to have lived in the eighth century in Kufa,a village in Iraq. Though we cannot clearly determine the origin of this ingenuous character, two graves exist: one in a village of Anatolia and one in Algeria. It is always the same adventures which are told about this false naive of the Arab Muslim world; these short stories are ethical, farcical, absurd, sometimes naughty or mischievous. Many have both a teaching and historical aspect. Some stories depict his wife Khadidjah or his donkey; in others he is a Cadi (judge) or a Koranic school teacher. The series “Djouha”, starring Hakim Dekkar, is inspired by his many adventures.
