Abstract

The word' Souk Ahras' is compsed of two words: Souk which means “market” in Arabic and Ahras which means “Lion” in Berber Chaoui (this is because of the presence of these animals in the forests until 1930) thus the word “the market of lions" . . The city is ST Augustin's hometown ,Bishop of Hippone 1, (who was born on the 13th November 354) . Souk Ahras has played an important role in both the political and cultural history of Algeria; this is due to its strategic position. It has also been a crossroads of civilizations: Numidian, Roman and Berber and a site of military fortifications (Madaura, Tifèche, Khemissa…)
