Abstract

Abu Al-Hassan Ali ben Nafi, also known as Zyriab ( 789-857) was born in Mossul, Iraq, and died in Cordoba. He studied and developed his talents of singer and musician in Baghdad. After a short stay in Tunisia, he settled in Cordoba in 822 in the court of the Omeyad Emir Abd al Rahmane II. He was one of the main figures in the history of the Arab-Andalusian music in the 9th century. He introduced the Oud ( arabic luth ) after he had added a fifth string. It is the luth which later spread all over Europe. Through several halts, the journalist Abdelkrim Sekkar introduces the arab music and its influences on western one.
