Built in 1794 by the Dey Baba Hassen, the mosque of Ketchaoua later served for the catholic cult and was transformed into a cathedral, before being retrieved by the Muslim cult after the independence. It is a surprising building with a mixture of Romano- Byzantine and Turkish-Arab styles. Ketchaoua was the centre of a lively neighbourhood, between the citadel and the roadstead of Algiers. Being a witness and the memory of the history of Algiers, it tells about the Barberousse brothers, the Othoman Deys, then the colonial period that imposed the Christian cult, finally its return to Islam after the independence of Algeria in 1962. Ketchaoua mosque is listed by the Unesco as a world heritage of humanity.Type
