Abstract

Around the fourth century B.C, the Phoenicians established a trading post on the Bay of Algiers, called " Ikosim " ( seagulls island), which later became " Icosium ", under the Roman empire. The city remained Roman until the arrival of the Vandals, in the mid- fifth century. It was then ruled by the Byzantines, until the were kiched out by the Berbers. The true destiny of Algiers will start to be accomplished in the tenth century, when the Emir Bologhine Ibn Ziri decided to make it his capital and named it " El Djazair", in reference to the group of islets in the bay. From then on, Algiers has played a commercial role in the Mediterranean.
