Abstract

Located 430 km from the capital Algiers, Oran is Algeria's second largest city and one of the major cities in the Maghreb. It is a port city on the Mediterranean, situated in the northwest of Algeria. It seems that the name "Wahran" (Oran in Arabic) comes from the Arabic word "wahr" (means "lion") and "an" (means "two"), giving the word "Wahran" (two lions"). The legend says that at the time (circa 900), there were still lions in the area. The last two hunted lions lived in the moutain near Oran, which is called, besides, "montain of lions". A journey through the history of one of the largest cities in the Mediterranean.
