Abstract

During the second Punic War, the two Numidian kingdoms of Syphax and Gaia were the allies of Carthage in its war against Rome. They although engaged militarily with Carthage in all the battles, in Spain and Italy. But everything changed when the Roman general Scipio decided to bring the war in North Africa. This action was decided in order to release the pressure exercised by general Hannibal on the Roman capital. But to defeat Carthage in North Africa, Rome needed the support and alliance of the Numidian kingdoms. Rome first asked to Syphax who after some hesitation chose the camp of Carthage. Masinissa, who was at that time the King of Massyles, chose the Roman camp.
