Abstract

A visit to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, inaugurated in 2002. The project has been achieved by a committee chaired by Mrs Suzanne Moubarak. The Bibliotheca resumes the vocation of the ancient library of Alexandria as the great library of the Mediterranean world. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is the result of a project led by the Unesco and Egypt. Its building has a very modern and highly symbolic architecture. The plans were designed by the Egyptian engineer Mamdouh Hamza. In addition to the huge reading room and its columns, the library includes three museums, five research institutes and many exhibition rooms.
