Abstract

The architecture of the region of river Sava, Tutropolje, Posavina, Pokuplje, is truly unique. Most of the houses are built perpendicularly to the flow of the Sava River with the front facing the water. In the past a typical one-storey house was raised on stilts (babci) to safeguard the house against floods. The house itself was always secure from water. As a rule, a traditional house is made of oak. The construction is made of oak planks joined and fastened with wooden wedges and wooden beams at the height of the ceiling that hold the construction together. The interior walls are covered with a mixture of clay, water and weeds. The floor is made of earth (called klak) mixed with ox-blood to secure cleanliness. In the past the roof was made of wooden shingle, later on biber tiles were used.
