Abstract

In the 19th and early 20th century, many local women from Preko earned their money washing laundry to the Zadar nobel families. Lavandijere were coming every monday to Zadar to pick up the laundry and were delivering it on saturday. Laundry was washed in a container (bucket) with ash and homemade soap. We have a testify of their hard life in the tragic death of 16 lavandijeras on 2nd November 1891, who died when their boat capsized near the island of Galevca while they were transporting clean laudry, ready for delivery to their owners in Zadar. In memory of this tragic event, female inhabitants of Preko built a statue in the center of their village.
