Dubrovnik carols (Kolende), old custom of greetings that are nurtured in the Dubrovnik area. Carollers are touring the streets and houses at Christmas Eve, toast and congratulate the upcoming Christmas and New Year. Carollers can carry a variety of musical instruments, mainly mandolin, guitar and accordion, whose playing carols embellish. History of carols goes back far into the past, and the earliest written evidence can be found in the 13th century within the Statute of the Dubrovnik Republic in 1272. The Statute mentions New Year carolers, usually as butchers, millers and fishermen. This custom still lives in Dubrovnik and its surroundings. Viganj is one of the villages with a strong tradition of Christmas songs (Kolende).Type
