Abstract

This is a tribute to Mouloud Feraoun, Kabylian writer, who was assassinated by an O.A.S commando, four days before the ceasefire in Algeria, by his friend Emmanuel Robles who published his posthumous diary which evokes the man and the writer. Extract from the Jean-Marie Drot program, ‘In Search of Albert Camus’ (Art and Men), initially broadcast on 02/21/1962, where Mouloud Feraoun pays a tribute to Albert Camus, torn by the war in Algeria.

- We must say that Camus was an Algerian, almost in the physical sense of the term.

- In Actuelles III, last part, the one he wrote in 1956,

- he precisely says that about events in Algeria he says: “I have an Algeria ache, as others have a lung ache.”

- I reckon that this is very significant. He could not see clearly through himself.

- He could not see a way out.

- He likes Algeria very much, as a consequence he was Algerian; on the other hand, he was a great French writer.

- His wrench is conceivable for such a sensitive man, as righteous, as upright as he was.

- Anyway, Muslim Algerians, I reckon, understand him, and admire him and love him.

- We consider him to be an Algerian glory.

- And, precisely, the fact that he is restricted to this silence is,

- as far as we are concerned, I reckon, a mark of sympathy, maybe more, for us.
