Abstract

The Chapel of Mercy located in the Cours Saleya in Nice is a true masterpiece of Baroque art. Belonging to the Brotherhood of Black Penitents, it is rarely open to the public and is considered one of the top five masterpieces of Baroque architecture in the world. Its construction began in 1740 according to the plans of Vittone, an architect from Piedmont . Professor Castella explains the features of this chapel: its elliptical plan and decoration chosen by Vittone, to translate his feelings towards the Virgin. Among the attractions of this chapel, the altarpiece of the Virgin of Mercy, painted by Mirallet in 1430, that represents the primitive art of Nice, and the Virgin of Mercy, by Louis Brea, the Nice painter, in 1485.
