Abstract

In Nice, the archaeological site of "La Terra Amata" is disappearing under concrete. The regions of Provence and Côte d'Azur are rich in excavation sites on the prehistory. Interview with Professor Max Escalon de Fonton, President of the French Society of Prehistory (congress held in Martigues): he speaks of the urgent circumstances in which excavations are carried out, which cannot be exhaustive. Amounts of information are lost forever. He speaks about the weather conditions 20 000 years ago, and the lifestyle of that time. His comments are illustrated by drawings, scenic views and photos. In La Couronne, near Martigues, remains of a village from the neolithic were found in an incredible state of conservation.
