Abstract

In western Mediterranean, 4000 years BC, no civilization had developed. The ‘sea peoples’ invaded Corsica about 32 centuries ago, and built circular stone buildings on top of mountains as in Araghiu, Cucuruzzu and Bavella, which earned them the name of ‘Torrean’. The island then opened to history with the arrival of Phoenicians who created Alalia (Aleria), in 564 BC. The Greek civilization extended; Rome succeeded to Greece: the village of Alalia became a city. Over the centuries, the shores of the island have seen many invaders; the ‘Sartenais’ language would still be the Latin of the Roman legions. As for the menhirs and dolmens in the inlands of Corsica, we still don’t know who has erected them.
