Also in Tunisia, Djerba's El Ghriba synagogue has long attracted Muslims. The annual festival was an important moment of social activity on the island and, in some ways, of inter-change between the communities. From the early 1990's the pilgrimage was taken over by the Tunisian government to make it into a showcase of Tunisian “tolerance”. Jewish pilgrims, mainly from France, were organized and given state protection. Since the event was well covered by the media (both in print and broadcast) it would be better to examine how different countries, particularly Tunisia, France and Israel, reported it. Since the Djerba synagogue had become an internationally recognised symbol of interfaith dialogue, it is possible that was the reason Al Qaeda chose it as the target of a deadly attack in 2002.
