Abstract

Excerpt from the fifth issue of the beautiful series on the Mediterranean (based on the work of F.Braudel), on migration in the Mediterranean. The Venaissin County (which includes the cities of Avignon, Carpentras, Cavaillon and L'Isle sur la Sorgue) is transferred to the papacy in the fourteenth century. The relative tolerance of the popes allowed many Jews from France to escape persecution and the "Pope's Jews" lasted until the French Revolution. Interview with a representative of the current community, the rabbi of the synagogue of Carpentras, who evokes the story of his own Sephardic family, which led his parents and himself from Morocco to Egypt, then to the Comtat.
