Abstract

Maurice Béjart, who converted to Islam in 1974, talks about the very personal journey that led him to choose the Islamic religion. Since childhood, he has been fascinated by the East, thanks to his father, Gaston Berger, who makes him find out the magnetic world of Asia. From 1968, date of creation of Bhakti, the very design of his choreography reflects a clear trend towards orientalism. Around 1972, Bejart receives the light of Islam in Iran: it is a revelation. He creates two ballets of Iranian inspiration, Farah and Golestan. What does this religion mean to him? Isn’t he just seduced by the Western dream of a mythical East where the magic of the’ thousand and one nights’ would reign?
