Abstract

‘Sun, Space, Greenery’: these are the essential joys that Le Corbusier wanted to conciliate, in the town planning to which he had thought of, to rebuild Algiers. The architect vehemently criticizes the unlivable world man is building for himself: ‘those locative cages where civilized people live like rats, in holes’. Nevertheless, he is enthusiastic about the construction in terraces and alleys of the Casbah where life grows organically, with a contrast between the outside and inside of these houses with courtyards and fountains, and where ‘the warriors can taste the joy of living’. Throughout his work, Le Corbusier will remember the lesson of Africa.
