Abstract

Alexandria keeps track of its 19th century cosmopolitanism. Some men, natives or living in this city, try to decipher its charm sometimes tinged with nostalgia. Elias Yannakakis, teacher at the University of Lille, finds traces of the Europeanized past in the Trianon pastry shop and in the tram station; Georges Moustaki rediscovers the school of his youth; for Edouard El Kharrat, a writer, this city has a deep and singular identity; Ibrahim Abdel Meguid describes its contemporary constraints: over-population and urbanization.
