Abstract

Arles, a city that has existed since Ancient Greece, has grown considerably with the arrival of Julius Caesar. With the decline in the middle Ages, the arenas shelter homes. The amphitheatre is restored to its vocation in 1830, when, in honor of Charles X and the capture of Algiers, a bullfight is held there. Since then the arenas have a vocation of bullfighting, inspired by Spain. Jean Maurice Rouquette, curator of the museum of Arles recalls the events of the expropriation of the arenas. Hubert Yonnet, Director of the Arenas, also explains the conflict between the arrangements for public safety and the conservation of the monument as it is.
