The "Cité des Liserons'' (the city of bindweed), former Volubilis now in ruins, was a Roman city near Mekhnes in the Middle Atlas in Morocco. The excavations have unearthed a capitol, a forum and a basilica. Hassan Limane, curator, explains the functions of these monuments that were related to the judicial and political management of the city. Thermal baths were also found, with mosaics on the soil, reminiscent of Berber carpets. The city of Volubilis was abandoned by the Roman occupation in 285. The "romanized" Mauritanians remained there until the Islamic occupation with Moulay Idriss 1st, founder of the first Muslim dynasty of the city of Fez.Type
