Abstract

At 69, the new academician Assia Djebar has published twenty books written in French and claims the wealth of her multilingual culture. The daughter of an Algerian teacher, student of Normal Sup', she was only 20 years old when she published her first novel. In 1979, she launched out into the cinema with the film "The Nuba of Mount Chenoua Women",which was banned in North Africa but applauded at the Venice Biennial.
