Abstract

This story takes place in Sartene, in southern Corsica. It is dedicated to the secular traditional custom of the Catenacciu (or catenaccio), which takes place on Good Friday, last Friday before Easter. At night, a man whose face is hidden by a red hood, bearing chains at his feet and a cross on his back, walks barefoot, among the crowd who sings religious songs. This procession is intended to imitate Jesus Christ and atone for the sins of the chained (meaning of Catenacciu) and those of the city of Sartene. This Catenacciu was chosen by the priest of the town from a list of volunteers. The priest and the masked Catenacciu are interviewed during the report.
