Commemoration of the riots of Setif May 8, 1945,in Algeria, where thousands of Algerians gathered to celebrate the Allied victory but also claim their independence. The 20,000 deaths foreshadow the Algerian war in Algeria which begins ten years later. Interview with Benjamin Stora, a historian, author of "The book, memory of history" alternating with a comment on archival images and photographs.

- Here are some very rare archive images of the repression of the demonstrations in Constantine region, broadcast today by the Algerian TV.

- May 8th, 1945, Messali Hadj, a nationalist leader, is sent to jail.

- The whole region brandished the flag with the crescent and the star.

- The riots end with a hundred of victims among the French but the repression will be extremely brutal:

- 15 to 20,000 Algerian dead.

- In cinema news, not a word about the Setif riots.

- .

- At this time in France, people are very pro colonies.

- People still say that France is a country of 100 million inhabitants with its empire.

- The only action from France, Paris sends back to Algeria with honor its soldiers’ corpses from overseas.

- The pioneers of Algerian independence, Messali Hadj along with Ferhat Abbas, Setif delegate, understood it.

- The Algerians, despite their contribution to the victory, will never be French.

- So the claim for independence grows.
