Abstract

The maallems in Morocco are the masters of each craft discipline. They retain their formulas and secrets by transmitting them orally to their sons or disciples. Andre Paccard, passionate designer of Islam, is the principal architect of the renovation of the royal palaces and mosques. Under his leadership the maallems of all disciplines work together and reveal some of their jealously guarded secrets. Craftsmen restoring the ceiling of a Hamman, sculpting or turning the wood to make musharabiehs. We discover a carving cedar wood workshop led by Mohammed the maallem Mohamed M'bouri. Restoration of a palace in Marrakesh. Artisans painting the ceiling with traditional colors. Detail of carved friezes.
