Abstract

Historian Benjamin Stora is invited for his book "The three exiles of the Jews of Algeria". He recalls the ancient presence of this community in North Africa and their special status during the Ottoman Empire. The first internal exile is that established by the Cremieux decree of 1870, which created a divide between native Muslims and Jews in the French colony; it is followed by the racist laws of the State of Vichy, the repeal of the Cremieux statute, then its restitution by General De Gaulle and the new French nationality. Jews of Algeria also will experience the exile of 1962.
