Abstract

Conquests of Venice, from Corfu to Alexandria via Cyprus. Fernand Braudel explains how the Serenissima, by its geographical position, became that capitalist center of the Middle Ages, trade link between northern Europe and the Islamic East. The decadence of Venice begins with the rural rooting of the rich merchants in the Palladian villas along the Brenta, and ended with the Napoleonic conquest.
