Abstract

The Council of Ministers approved the draft law on port reform for the seven major French ports, to boost their competitiveness. From the status of "autonomous Ports" to that of "Great seaports", they will be managed by a Supervisory board and an Executive board. Above all, the reform envisages the privatization of some tooling activities, making loose their status of public officers to the crane operators and the gantry crane operators, as dockworkers before them in 1994. Marc Reverchon, UMF President (Maritime and fluvial Union) of Marseille-Cros, which includes 300 port companies, explains that they will depend on a single direction. The government expects the private sector to invest, following the example of the new terminal at Fos (Fos 2XL). The government commits itself to a development aid by 2013 if the social partners reach agreement.
