In an inn of the higher part of Thessalonica, Jani and his friends meet every week. They play and sing songs that were written in the 1930s by men who lived in the slums. Their songs talk about love, jail, drugs. They were called “rebetis”, from the Turkish name meaning “outlaw”. They were banned by the dictatorships. Today, every Greek knows them. Those are their “blues”, they call them “rebetiko”.Type
