Abstract

This episode is about the Kerak castle located 130 km south of Amman in southern Jordan. It was built on a mountain 960 meters high, surrounded by valleys. The program presents details of its dimensions, its architecture and the time of its construction. The castle has undergone numerous conquests throughout history: under the reign of the Nabataeans, it was part of their kingdom; in 106, after the collapse of Petra Romans invaded the castle of Karak. Christianity spread during the Byzantine period and after the occupation of Jerusalem by the crusaders who made the castle their stronghold until its liberation by Salah Eddine in 1184. The destroyed walls were then restored in Islamic style; the Mamluk have added towers. In 1510, El Karak came under Ottoman rule. So for each period of occupation an element was added as a mark of the occupant, which can be seen through the inscriptions, walls and towers.
