Abstract

The castle of Shawbek was built on a mountain surrounded by valleys during the Nabataean period. It had provided comfort and safety to caravans before it was destroyed when the Nabataean kingdom fell in 106. The castle was rebuilt by a Persian king named Byoden; it was a strategic place for its defense capacity and its location on the road to the Islamic pilgrimage. It was besieged and conquered by the Sultan Salah-Eddine El Ayoubi in 1189, ending the presence of the Crusaders. At the time of Az- Zâhir Baybars, some walls have been added. The castle, which has undergone several reconstructions and demolitions, tells the long history of conquests and victories through its walls, towers, inscriptions and sculptures.
