Abstract

Gadara, Umm Qais today is located 30 kms north of Irbid . Its ruins which date back to the Roman civilization are perched on top of a hill overlooking the Jordan Valley and the lake Tiberias. Umm Qais belonged to the cities of the Decapolis (the Union of ten cities in the Roman period). These cities are in Jordan, Syria and Palestine. The Christ visited Gadara with some of the Apostles, and cast out the devil from the city. In the fourth century, it became a Diocese, and in 614, it was invaded by the Persian armies which destroyed its churches. It was freed in 635 by the Arab Muslim Armies, under the reign of Omar Ibn El Khattab. Today, we can visit the colonnaded street, churches and amphitheaters that were used for sport, drama and celebrations. Not far from Gadara are the Sulphur baths, frequently used by the Romans at that time.
