Abstract

This episode is about the Arabian oryx which was a victim of overhunting. Overhunting almost brought this species to extinction in the desert of Jordan. The animal has been reintroduced in the protected natural reserve of Shomari, east of Jordan, in the region of Azraq but its number is still small. The oryx is a beautiful animal which has gained the Arabs' esteem as it is mentioned in poetry and is described in literature. It is characterized by its ability to live in the desert despite the difficulties. It is well adapted to the dry environment of the desert and the scarcity of water and plants.
