Abstract

The episode is about Ayla, currently Aqaba, located south of Jordan. It is known for its castle and rich history. The Muslim pilgrims used to stop at Aqaba on their way to Mecca. During the early medieval period, due to an earthquake, part of the city was swallowed up by the sea. The city was a battle field in the wars between the Hebrews and the Qadomiyine. The Hebrews were kicked out in the first century B.C, the city became Christian, after the fall of the Nabataeans. After the Muslim conquest of the Levant, it became part of the Omeyyade and the Abassid states. Ayla had four gates: the gate of Egypt, that of the Levant, the gate of the sea and that of Hijaz.
