- Sutri: a small town located on a tuff spur with a long history. We are about 50 kilometers in the north of Rome, on the road to Cassia, not far from Viterbo.

- The old town and its palaces witness of the importance that Sutri had during centuries, thanks to its strategic position on the road to Cassia, that units Rome to the north of Italy.

- Between Sutri’s walls, councils and several meetings between some kings and popes took place,

- such as the one known under the name of “Giuramentum Sutrium” in 1111, that consecrated peace between Enrico IV and Pope Pasquale II.

- In the Dome, the obtained agreements were sealed and people kneeled on the Cosmati floor, composed by uncountable patches of colored stones.

- Then, meditating, they walked down into the crypt, a gem that certainely belongs to the time of the Lombards,

- with many columns and many apses and niches dug into the turff walls, decorated with fragrant flowers.

- Before asking, I will show you other places I recommend to see in Sutri.

- To start with, the archeological museum that keeps Etruscan, Roman and medieval pieces.

- The Etruscan pieces are a reminder that Sutri was a major Etruscan center, its name would be coming from an Etruscan divinity “Saturnio”, “Sutrius”in Etruscan.

- A visit to the archeological park, at the doors of Sutri, cannot be missed.

- Here you can see the most famous monuments, the amphitheatre, that is certainly Roman and dating back to the first century AD.

- It is completely dug into a tuff hill, its arena is 49 meters over 40 meters.

- In the same zone, dug in turff, there are old Etruscan tombs from the Roman period.

- Some tombs were used for other purposes, as a sanctuary by the Romans, or as a church by the Christians in the Middle Ages.

- It is the green that is growing on those ruins that make me think of today’s question.

- The big trees that grow here, such as green oaks or hazel trees are not of interest to me, but I am surprised to see the small green mosses that cover the rocks and the ruins.
