Abstract

The art reviewer Philippe Daverio talks about the history of the Braidense Library and the Art Gallery in Milan and underlines the important role they had for the school of painting and carving in Italy. He demonstrates how Brera influenced the architecture of Milan, the cathedral in particular. Exteriors and interiors of the Braidense library, of the Duomo and of the Pinacoteca of Brera. Views of the botanical garden, details of some paintings stored in the gallery, including "Dead Christ" by Andrea Mantegna, "The Kiss" and the portrait of "Alessandro Manzoni" by Francesco Hayez, "The Madonna of the Candle" by Carlo Crivelli, portraits of Napoleon Bonaparte, paintings by Bellini, Tintoretto, Guido Reni and Appiani, "Fourth State" by Giuseppe Pellizza.
