Abstract

This episode recounts the role played by the Maghimina Zaouia in the Organization of religious, political and economic activities, especially in Draa’s Oasis and more generally in the South of Morocco. Thanks to its reputation in humanitarian actions and its role as a mediator to solve tribal conflicts, the Zaouia has acquired a fairly extensive authority which allowed it awards of merit and respect through “Dahirs” emanated from several Sultans of Morocco. Several disciples in all parts of Morocco are still loyal to the Zaouia “Mother” where the Marabout of the first founder Sidi Abdallah or Mhand is built. It’s there that the disciples organize a”Moussem” called “Souk Aam” (a yearly Souk). This Souk has lost its commercial reputation year by year and finally ceased to exist on the orders of the colonial authorities in 1929. After having completely lost its political and economic roles, the Zaouia of M-Ghinima still hangs to its spiritual role…but for how long yet?
